Please pass the Splenda...so I can throw it away.

I've been putting off this blog post for over a month, but now that I've seen over 10 infographics on this, it's time to write about this very popular and dangerous subject.

The Problem

There is so much research that has accumulated showing the negative affects of aspartame and artificial sweeteners on our bodies. But even so, people still opt for their regular Diet Coke or coffee with Splenda, Sweet 'N Low or NutraSweet thinking they are going for the "healthier" choice.

FALSE!

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed the link between artificial sweeteners (sugar substitutes) and weight gain. Studies showed that low-calorie sweeteners even promoted over-eating. I go further into this area of artificial sweeteners, but read this article for more information: Want to Lose Weight? My focus is not so much in weight loss or weight gain, even though that is very important. I am more concerned about the more critical diseases that result from the consistent consumption of this toxic product that has infiltrated diet and low carb foods.

The Effects

So many different diseases have already been linked to having used artificial sweeteners, but of course big pharmaceutical companies and the businesses developing them are fighting it tooth and nail. Some of these diseases include:

According to Natural News, Artificial Sweetener Disease (ASD) is affecting tens of thousands of consumers. While this is not an official medical disease and still goes unrecognized by the medical field, it is based on the amount of chemical sweeteners one consumes. The effects:
  • Recurring headaches
  • Unbearable migraines
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle pain
  • Arthritis flare ups
  • Buzzing or ringing in the ears
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • IBS
  • Crohn's disease
  • Inflammation
  • Acid reflux

S.D. Wells notes that, "The symptoms of ASD can change overnight, depending on how much chemical sweetener you consume, and which ones. Some combinations are especially toxic. Consumers can go from a migraine headache to vomiting or from vision problems to an upset stomach" (Artificial Sweetener Disease; a new breed of sickness).

The problem lies in going to the doctor to get treated for these things, but never changing the cause. Most of the time, doctors treat the symptoms not the problem. 

The Solution

So how do you cure ASD or the symptoms you get after consuming artificial sweeteners? Simple really: Stop consuming them.

Lay off the diet drinks and the artificial sweeteners that are causing you more harm than the "good" you think you're getting. (On a quick side note...they taste disgusting, but I get it, you're used to it.) 

Instead, try alternative sweeteners that are zero on the Glycemic Index (which is especially important for diabetics), and also digest naturally into our bodies. Xylitol and Stevia are great alternatives that are natural and low calorie.
